Why corporate events lose energy (and how to fix it)

You have the venue, the food and the budget. Yet an hour in, the energy is gone. Here's why, and what you can actually do about it.

The anatomy of a dying corporate event

You know the feeling. You're standing with a drink in a nice venue, surrounded by colleagues, and yet it feels... flat. The music is too loud for conversation and too quiet for dancing. Nobody quite knows what they're supposed to be doing. The speeches went on too long. And by 10pm, half the room has gone home.

It's not the venue. It's not the food. It's the absence of event entertainment that gives the evening structure and energy.

Mistake 1: Entertainment as an afterthought

The biggest mistake in corporate event planning is treating entertainment as a last addition. 'We have budget left over, let's book a band.' Entertainment that isn't integrated into the programme feels like a foreign element tacked on, rather than the thing that carries the evening.

Mistake 2: Too much structure, or too little

An evening without structure leaves people feeling like they have to entertain themselves. An evening with too much structure feels like a meeting with drinks. Event entertainment works as a backbone, it gives rhythm to the evening without controlling it.

Mistake 3: Underestimating your audience

Colleagues are not a passive audience. They want to have participated, laughed, been surprised, occasionally even performed. Interactive performances give them that chance. Street theatre hire or corporate theatre is not for the performers, it's for the guests.

The fix

Start with your objective. What do you want people to feel at the end of the evening? Build the programme around that. And choose entertainment that matches that feeling, not the act that happens to be available on that date.
