How Much Does Street Theatre Cost? (An Honest Answer)

The question nobody answers properly

"How much does street theatre cost?" is the question every event organiser has typed into Google at some point, and the answer they usually find is either: a) a vague range that tells them nothing, or b) a quote form that feels like it was designed to avoid the question.

So here is an honest answer.

The short version

For a professional street theatre act in Belgium, the UK or the Netherlands, expect to budget between €800 and €3,500 for a performance slot, depending on the act, the duration, the number of performers, the complexity of the costumes or equipment, and the travel involved.

What determines the price of street theatre?

1. The type of act

A solo walkabout character working a crowd for two hours costs less than a five-person spectacular with pyrotechnics and a custom soundtrack. Both are 'street theatre'. The word covers an enormous range.

At the simpler end: a single character performer, standard costume, no technical requirements. Effective, flexible, great value. At the complex end: a bespoke act built around your event's theme, multiple performers, choreographed movement, custom music. Spectacular, and priced accordingly.

2. Duration and frequency

One 45-minute set is very different from three 30-minute sets spread across a full day's festival. More time means more energy, more rehearsal, and usually more performers. It also means better value per hour as most companies (us included) offer better rates for longer or repeat bookings.

3. Number of performers

One performer. Five performers. A marching band of twelve. Each person is a professional who's trained for years, and pricing reflects that.

4. Travel and logistics

Based in Antwerp and booking someone from Brussels? Minimal surcharge. Booking a Belgian company for an event in London? Travel costs, accommodation and subsistence come into the equation.

5. Lead time and availability

Last-minute bookings in peak season (June to September) command higher rates. Booking in advance, especially for a festival or large event, gives you access to better rates and, more importantly, the specific acts you actually want.

What you're actually paying for

When you hire street theatre, you're not paying for someone to stand in a costume. You're paying for years of professional training, the ability to read and work a crowd in real time, physical performance across multiple sets, costume and prop maintenance, travel, insurance, and the creative work that went into developing the act.

The acts that look effortless are the ones that took the longest to develop.

Is it worth it?

Street theatre transforms a space. It creates atmosphere, it breaks down barriers between strangers, and it gives an event a story worth telling. For a festival that charges €40 per ticket, a well-chosen street theatre act that keeps 200 people engaged for two hours is not a cost. It's an investment.
